Alastair Humphreys is a British adventurer and author who has been on expeditions across the world, travelling through over 80 countries by bicycle, boat and on foot.
Alastair’s quest for adventure begun aged nine when he completed the 20 mile Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge. At 13, he completed the National 3 Peaks in 24 hours and at 15, he cycled off-road across England.
Whilst at university, Alastair cycled from Pakistan to China, Land’s End to John O’Groats, Turkey to Italy, Mexico to Panama and across South America. He ran a charity project in the Philippines and the London marathon dressed as a rhino.
Since then, Alastair has cycled round the world for four years, raced a yacht across the Atlantic Ocean, canoed 500 miles down the Yukon River and walked the length of the holy Kaveri river in India.
He has also run the Marathon des Sables (finishing as one of the ten fastest Brits despite breaking his foot during the race) and rowed to France with a paralysed soldier. In 2010 he completed an unsupported crossing of Iceland by foot and packraft.
In 2012 Alastair rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, did an expedition in Greenland and walked across the Empty Quarter desert.
Since then he has concentrated on his microadventures, encouraging people to get out and fit more adventure into their busy lives. He has worked with clients including National Geographic, Talisker and Adidas on the movement.
His book Microadventures inspired by the movement, was an Amazon UK Top 20 bestseller followed by his book Grand Adventures which reached Number 8 in the Amazon UK book chart.
In 2012, Alastair was chosen as one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year and in 2019, he won the Ordnance Survey Children’s Travel Book of the Year.
Alastair is a patron of the charity Hope and Homes for Children, the Youth Adventure Trust, the Outdoor Swimming Society, and the Yorkshire Dales Society.
Alastair has presented to audiences on six continents, challenging perceptions and inspiring action. From captivating talks at the Royal Geographical Society to energising engagements with corporate clients such as Google, Ernst & Young, BP, T-Mobile, and Facebook, Alastair sparks a fire of enthusiasm wherever he goes.
Alastair’s expeditions are a call to arms that nothing is achieved without being bold enough to begin it and that the first step needs only be a tiny one to set us on the way to realising that we are all capable of more than we imagine.
Alastair has spent years tackling adventures that are simple but not easy and values the crucial difference between those two words. Each journey has generated a wealth of great stories, whether it is cycling round the world for four years on a budget of £7000, rowing the Atlantic Ocean with three strangers, breaking his foot on the world’s toughest ultra-marathon (but still finishing the race), walking across India, hauling a 350kg cart through the Empty Quarter desert, busking through Spain with no money or credit card, or even walking a lap of the M25 motorway round London!

What do you learn about yourself when you face difficult times? You realise that you are capable of more than you imagine. Making quick and confident decisions in stressful situations is hard, but so too is committing to that decision, showing faith in it and following through with it by determined, flexible action.
Planning for expeditions requires not only careful consideration of the challenges ahead, but also a willingness to accept that you cannot prepare for every eventuality, and the confidence and nerve to trust yourself to figure things out along the way. In our era of instant gratification, expeditions demand a passion to pursue long-term goals.
And let us not forget to enjoy the journey, through all its stressful, daunting, exhausting, maddening, and amusing twists and turns. The end goal is not all that matters, and the more we enjoy the challenges along the way, the more likely we are to succeed in the long run.

Alastair spoke to a group of very senior Marketing VPs and CMOs at a Google event. He did a wonderful job of engaging and inspiring the audience, with them hanging on his every word for 30 minutes. He was equally comfortable presenting to his amazing photographs, or handling a range of questions. I would have no hesitation in recommending him for a corporate audience.
I’ve witnessed many of these presentations over the years but I have never observed such universal engagement between the speaker and his audience. Al has a knack of being humbly inspiring and motivational whilst at the same time being just an ordinary guy. He effortlessly personalized his subject matter for the audience, was fun and memorable. Importantly, he actually inspired change within the audience, people responded and took action to make their own personal lives more satisfying, an intangibly wonderful result. Finally he was a doddle to deal with, wholly informal and flexible. An effortless 10/10.
