Originating in the USA, Black History Month started as a week of celebrations nearly a century ago in 1926. More than four decades later it became a month-long celebration in 1970 and has taken place annually in the UK since 1987 to celebrate the heritage, history, arts, culture and contributions of black people to British society, and foster an understanding of Black History in general.
UK Black History Month is now acknowledged in a variety of ways, from food festivals and music events to educational workshops and seminars. We represent a comprehensive roster of Black History Month speakers that inspire and educate audiences on issues such as ethnicity, anti-racism, discrimination, legal rights, identity and belonging, unconscious bias and cultural diversity.
Having expanded beyond its initial acceptance in educational establishments, the business community — encompassing companies and organisations of all sizes — now recognise the importance of Black History Month and instils a culture of inclusion, belonging and anti-racism. Our Black History Month speakers are highly sought-after to reflect on the diverse achievements and contributions to the social, political, economic and cultural development of the UK, from those of African and Caribbean descent over many generations.
More recently, in 2020 the #BlackLivesMatter movement gained global media attention following the killing of George Floyd in the USA. An estimated 25 million people worldwide participated in protests, making Black Lives Matter one of the largest and most significant movements in history.
