Flo & Joan, a name they took from their grandmother and her sister, are the multi-award winning British musical comedy duo, and sisters, Nicola and Rosie Dempsey.
The piano/percussion pair have headlined and played to sold-out audiences across the UK, North America and Australia including festival appearances at Glastonbury, Latitude, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and JFL Montreal Comedy Festival. Their hour-long special is now streaming in over 200 countries on Amazon Prime.
The sisters grew up in Cosham, a suburb of Portsmouth in Hampshire, lived in Toronto for a few years, and as of 2019 are now living in London. And with a style that is stiletto sharp, their diction perfect as they race through their complex rhymes, critics have likened them to Kiwi superstars Flight of the Conchords.
They made it big via Facebook. Their 2016 Song, berating the annus horribilis that saw the deaths of icons from Bowie to Prince, notched up more than 40 million views as they portrayed the painful 12 months as a faulty computer or difficult teenager. “Should we just try to unplug you/And then plug you back in?/Did your parents get divorced/Or did you just drink too much gin?”
After graduating from Cardiff University, Nicola decided to do a comedy course at the Second City training centre in Toronto, Canada. She was enjoying it so much that Rosie joined her there after she left London University with a degree in English. In their spare time they started posting musical clips on their Facebook pages simply to show friends and family what they were up to. Then suddenly they went viral.
A hugely acclaimed live act, Flo & Joan’s show Sweet Release was their fifth full-length show and their most critically and commercially successful show to date. Totalling 148 performances, the tour was twice-extended and also included runs at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The pair have had high-profile television appearances on Live at the Apollo, The Royal Variety Performance, Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day, Jonathan Ross’ Comedy Club and The Russell Howard Hour, and their songs regularly go viral online, amassing over 75 million views across social media.
They have written songs for the West End musical Death Drop and written and performed songs for Evil (CBS/Paramount Plus), BBC Digital, Question Team (C4), Aardman, Horrible Histories (CBBC), Radio Times, Rob Delaney’s Stand Up Central (Comedy Central), Mark Watson Talks a Bit About Life, The Now Show and Fresh From the Fringe (all BBC Radio 4) and This Hour Has 22 Minutes (Canadian Broadcasting Company).
In 2018, they were featured in a Nationwide building society television advert.

Oh my Lord, Flo & Joan had us rolling in the aisles. They were superb and very, very lovely too.
The client was very happy with everything, and the CEO said she had jaw ache by the end of it so that’s a good sign!
