Hamza Yassin is a Sudanese-born Scottish wildlife cameraman who moved to the UK when he was young. His impressive qualifications include a Masters Degree (MSc.) in Biological Imaging and Photography with Merit in addition to his Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Zoology with Conservation, after studying at Bangor University.
He has a passion for birds, is a skilled ornithologist and bird nest recorder with excellent field craft and habitat knowledge. Hamza is also a published wildlife photographer as well as a wildlife tour guide.
His first foray into presenting was on BBC’s The One Show as one of their new wildlife cameramen and is now a presenter — under the guise of Ranger Hamza — of the hugely popular CBeebies’ live-action show Let’s Go For A Walk.
He can also be spotted presenting and sharing his vast knowledge and camera skills on BBC’s Countryfile and ITV’s This Morning regularly. Hamza is the presenter and cameraman for Channel 4 ‘s documentary, ‘Scotland, My Life in the Wild’, in which he takes viewers on a tour of his home in Scotland, showcasing incredible footage of the surrounding wildlife and the immense patience and skill that goes into capturing these amazing moments as a wildlife cameraman.
Most recently Hamza has joined the team of wildlife experts on BBC One’s Animal Park. He has assisted wildlife cameraman Jesse Wilkinson on projects including a film insert for Springwatch 2015, filming a Sparrow hawk sequence for Silverbacks ‘The Hunt’ narrated by Sir David Attenborough and a film sequence about the British obsession with egg collecting!
In 2021, he presented Scotland: Escape to the Wilderness, a four-part series that saw him take four celebrities (Martin Clunes, Baroness Warsi, Ben Miller and Reverend Richard Coles) to wild locations around Scotland, showing them the local wildlife.
Hamza lives in a rural part of the west coast of Scotland, with wildlife and nature right on his doorstop as a constant inspiration for his work. In his spare time, Hamza competes in the Highland Games. In 2022, he signed up to appear as a contestant on the twentieth series of Strictly Come Dancing.
A hugely charismatic and popular after dinner speaker, Hamza Yassin’s talk is entitled My Life Behind the Lens and follows his journey from Sudan to England, his struggles with dyslexia at school, being homeless in order to fulfil his ambition of being a wildlife cameraman and culminating by winning Strictly Come Dancing in 2022, together with his professional dance partner, Jowita Przystal.
Hamza brings along his cameras and beautiful photography from his wildlife adventures whilst also talking about overcoming adversity.
Hamza exceeded all my expectations. His talk was fascinating, but also genuine and really natural. The fact that he was there all weekend, just enjoying the show was a real bonus.
He was lovely with everyone (especially the kids) and dealt with the constant attention so well, never seeming like he’d rather not interact – in fact I had to keep telling people to move on as they were having such a long chat! He was the highlight of my weekend – please pass on my thanks to him.
Just to let you know Hamza was an absolute gentleman and an amazing guest speaker, everyone loved him. We hope he had a lovely time at the festival. Thank you for all your hard work and efforts to arrange his schedule to include us in. We really appreciate it.
After hearing Hamza speak today, I think our brand values fit really well with Hamza’s vision of inspiring the next generation to nurture nature and our environment.
It was brilliant! We had so many people come to see Hamza and hear his stories. He is such a lovely person and we hope he enjoyed his time too. I have had so much feedback from staff and visitors.
