Instantly recognisable, Matthew Wright is a renowned journalist, TV presenter and broadcaster who has been a regular on our TV screens and airwaves for over 25 years.
For 18 of those years, he presented the daily live current affairs show, The Wright Stuff, on Channel Five. The show, launched in September 2000 gave Matthew an opportunity to combine his journalistic skills with a naturally extrovert personality. Everyone from Tony Blair to George Galloway and Ben Elton to Brian May appeared over the years generating scores of stories for the press along the way.
While other channels dumb down their daytime output, often mocking the very poorest or most unfortunate in society along the way, The Wright Stuff aimed to raise the bar and poses seriously challenging moral and ethical dilemmas to viewers every weekday morning.
Having presented his final show in June 2018, Matthew Wright is now a regular on ITV’s This Morning, frequently taking part in The Morning View debating the latest news topics. His Radio career has seen him host his own shows on Radio 2, LBC and more recently he hosts The Matthew Wright Show on TalkRadio.
Matthew began his media career at the tender age of 14, when he starred in Big Wheels and Sailors for the Children's Film Foundation. Despite this early brush with stardom, he decided to concentrate on his academic career and went on to study English and Drama at Exeter University.
After graduating, Matthew tried his hand at something entirely different and settled on journalism. He moved quickly up the ladder from local papers to the nationals, and at the age of 26, he joined The Sun's 'Bizarre' showbiz desk.
Two years later, he left to help develop The Richard Littlejohn Show for Sky and which gave Matthew his first break in television, regularly providing the show with news packages as well as zany features. When the series ended twelve months later, Fleet Street persuaded Matthew to return with a three-month stint on the Today newspaper.
In 1995, Matthew was asked to join The Mirror and set up his showbiz gossip column. With his cheeky rubber faced grin, he charmed his way in to the hearts of some of the biggest names in the business, landing interviews with Cher, Madonna, Elizabeth Taylor, Elton John and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Through his column, Matthew started to attract attention on TV, and in 1998 he consolidated his TV work joining GMTV as the show's TV critic with a once-a-week slot alongside Lorraine Kelly. His daily debate show, The Wright Stuff, was commissioned in 2000 and became one of Channel 5's most successful commissions.
Matthew Wright is a fan of live music and regularly attends concerts. In 2003, he performed on stage with his favourite band, Hawkwind, at the London Astoria, after interviewing the band's frontman Dave Brock on radio.
He is now a friend of the band and released a single with them, Spirit of the Age, in 2006, and is credited on their album Take Me To Your Leader, released the same year. A fan of progressive rock, he was the host of Prog magazine's annual Progressive Music Awards for four years.
