Dave Fishwick

Dave Fishwick is the Burnley entrepreneur best-known for founding The Bank of Dave following the 2007-2008 financial crisis.

After leaving school at sixteen with no qualifications, Dave took a Youth Training Scheme course at a construction site. Finding himself unable to afford event a chip butty for lunch, he went from garage to garage asking if he could have a part-exchanged car to restore and sell in exchange for some of the profits. Dave eventually found a garage that agreed with his first profit coming in at £27.

Dave repeated the process over and over, eventually using the proceeds to open his own garage. Dave continued to grow his business going on to become the biggest minibus supplier in Britain.

In 2008, following the 2007–2008 financial crisis, Dave found that big banks were no longer willing to lend his customers money, posing an existential threat to his business. Convinced he could do better, Dave begun lending his own money on his own terms. With no borrowers defaulting on their payments during the first six months, he looked into setting up a bank himself.

What followed is now known as the ‘Dave and Goliath’ struggle.

In 2012, inspired by his experience, Dave fronted the Channel 4 hit show 'Bank of Dave'. The observational series saw Dave embark on a mission to create his own bank and send it into profit in 180 days.

Following the shows success, Dave went on to front several other series including 'Fighting The Fat Cats',’The Secret Millions’, ‘Dave: Lone Ranger’ and ‘The Shoppers Guide to Saving Money’.

In 2012, Dave released his Sunday Times Bestselling autobiography, ‘Bank of Dave: How I Took On the Banks’.

Dave is a regular contributor for the Daily Mail and The Mail On Sunday as the Business Doctor, with his columns focused on how businesses can grow.

The Netflix biographical comedy-drama Bank of Dave inspired by Dave’s book was released in 2023 winning ‘Best Feature Film of 2023 at the National Film Awards.
